How we estimate the timber budget
An octagon is about 2.4 times its side length across, flat to flat: 1.8 m sides make a pit about 4.3 m across, 2.4 m sides about 5.8 m, and 3.0 m sides about 7.2 m. Each pit has 8 sides of 200 mm high timber: 3 rows for 60 cm walls, 4 rows for 80 cm walls. You need 8 sides × rows lengths of timber, each as long as the side, priced at about $12.50 a metre. For 2.4 m sides and 80 cm walls that is 32 lengths of 2.4 m (about $30 each), about $950 in all, so with the $549 kit the budget is about $1,500. Local timber prices vary by supplier. The kit includes a timber list for standard 2.4 m sides; the online list gives the lengths for your chosen size. See the timber shopping list.
