Gaga ball games

Eight ways to change up gaga ball.

Once everyone knows the standard rules, try one of these. Each takes a minute to explain, and each suits a different age group or group size.

Game 1

Team gaga

Split into two teams and wear different colours or bibs. Play as normal, but the last team with a player standing wins.

Best for PE classes

Game 2

Double touch

Each player may hit the ball twice in a row before it has to touch a wall or another player. It gives newer players more time to line up a hit.

Best for beginners and younger students

Game 3

Two balls

Start with a second ball in play. There is more to watch and more chances to get players out, so rounds move quickly.

Best for big groups

Game 4

Catch for an out

If a player catches a ball that was hit, the player who hit it is out. It makes players think before they swing.

Best for older students

Game 5

Change the out zone

The standard rule is out on or below the knee. For younger players or a faster game, raise the out zone to below the waist.

Best for matching the game to the age group

Game 6

Rotation, not elimination

Instead of sitting out, players who are out rotate off the court and back in after a count. Nobody waits around.

Best for recess and after-school care

Game 7

One on one

Two players in the pit, first to win three rounds. A quick game that suits a short break.

Best for short breaks

Game 8

Soft ball round

Swap to a soft foam or lightweight ball for the first few games while new players learn the rules.

Best for first-time players

Before you start

Agree the rules first.

Gaga ball rules vary between schools and courts. Tell players which version you are using before the first round, and keep a soft ball handy for younger players.

Fair play

Keep it friendly.

Play safe, play fair and let the group change a rule if it is not working. The best games are the ones everyone gets to join.
